From coworkers to costars to friends to dating to exes! Chrishell Stause and Jason Oppenheim had serious history before taking their relationship to the next level in 2021.
The soap star met Jason and his twin brother, Brett Oppenheim, when she started working for The Oppenheim Group in 2018. During her first year at the agency, the group, which also includes Christine Quinn, Heather Rae Young, Maya Vander and Mary Fitzgerald, started filming the Netflix reality show Selling Sunset.
When the pair met, Stause had recently married Justin Hartley. The actress and the This Is Us star split in November 2019 while she was filming season 3, with Stause alleging she found out about the divorce petition via text message.
“Because of the crazy way in which this went down, people want answers, and I f—king want answers,” she told Fitzgerald on the 2020 season of the show. “I know people are saying we were only married two years, but it’s like, we were together for six years. … In a fight, that’s his go-to, you know? Like, ‘I’m out, I’m out.’ I hate that kind of impulsive stuff, but I always just thought, you know, that’s just an issue that we work through it.”
Following the divorce, Stause competed on Dancing With the Stars and was dragged into partner Gleb Savchenko’s messy split from his now-ex Elena Samodanova in November 2020. Both Stause and Savchenko denied that their relationship was anything but professional at the time. The real estate agent did, however, briefly date fellow professional dancer Keo Motsepe. They split in February 2021 after a few months of dating.
“Keo was caught in a web of lies,” a source told Us at the time. “He’s not denying the fact that he lied to her and is truly ashamed about something he did. … He genuinely loved her but made a big mistake. I don’t see them getting back together.”
Although he didn’t directly address the split, Motsepe told Entertainment Tonight in May 2021, “Everything that happens in life, people deal with things differently, and I deal with things differently. So I think for me personally, with everything in my life, I [turn to] music or dance, it just depends on the feeling at the moment.”
Fast-forward to the summer of 2021 — while the cast was seemingly taking a break from filming seasons 4 and 5 — Stause and Jason announced they are dating.
“Chrishell and I became close friends and it has developed into an amazing relationship,” he told Us Weekly in July 2021 statement when he confirmed they were dating. “I care about her deeply and we’re very happy together.”
In November 2021, Jason explained that their friendship provided the perfect base for an open and honest relationship.
“There was definitely a transition,” Jason told Us exclusively at the time. “We had been so open about what we were looking for with each other because we had become close friends. She knew my dating life, and we would almost joke about our each other’s dating lives and what we were looking for and things like that.”
He gushed, “I love her.”
Less than a month later, a source confirmed to Us Weekly that the Selling Sunset stars split before Christmas.

Stause joined The Oppenheim Group in 2018 years after she got her real estate license.
Selling Sunset started streaming on Netflix in March 2019. During season 1, Stause was still with Hartley, who never appeared on screen, and fans learned about Jason’s past with Fitzgerald.
“I don’t give her special treatment,” he told Good Housekeeping about his working relationship with Fitzgerald after their split. “I understand that there can be frustrations from other agents because they see that Mary is being involved in and brought on to many of my listings. While I don’t share the financials with everyone because that’s confidential, I think that everyone would admit based on just the obvious work that she’s done, that she’s bringing more money into this brokerage and selling more properties than anyone else.”
After dating Fitzgerald prior to Selling Sunset, Jason told Page Six in May 2021 that dating another costar “probably wouldn’t be an epic idea.” He added, “It’s not that I’ve taken a step back from dating — it’s not on my priority list to be honest. And no, that wouldn’t be a priority for me. I think that would be complicated.”
Stause and Jason went public with their romance in July 2021 during a group trip to Italy with Fitzgerald and her husband, Romain Bonnet, and Jason’s brother, Brett, and his girlfriend, Tina Louise.
“Nothing makes me more excited than to see two of my closest friends together and making each other so happy!” Fitzgerald commented via Instagram.
Bonnet added, “So happy for you guys! Finally people will stop with Jason and Mary hopefully.”
After making her relationship with Oppenheim public, Stause revealed that he was the person who sent her a lavish display of flowers and balloons for her 41st birthday earlier in the month. “Annnnd now that you guys know … thank you SO much @jasonoppenheim 🥰🥰🥰,” she wrote via Instagram, editing the caption on a photo that showed her posing with the brightly colored flowers.
After visiting Italy, the pair spent one night in London and enjoyed a romantic dinner.
In August 2021, the duo made their red carpet debut, posing for photos at the Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings premiere in Los Angeles.
The couple enjoyed their first New York Fashion Week together at the Bronx and Banco runway show on September 8.
“So proud of you!!” Stause gushed in an Instagram Story as her beau took the stage at The Hollywood Reporter’s Power Brokers event.
The realtors were all glammed up for a formal date night on September 29 with several of their Netflix costars. Stause shared snaps from the evening via Instagram, including one of her beau nuzzling her neck.
Stause shared a throwback photo of herself and her boyfriend taken during their summer trip to Italy. “I like my snacks with a little salt and pepper on them 😜😜,” she captioned the sweet selfie. “#TBT #ItalyThrowback #HeightAintNothingButaNumber.”
Ahead of Selling Sunset‘s return to Netflix, Chrishell confirmed to Cosmopolitan UK that her romance with Jason wouldn’t be highlighted on season 4 because they went public months after filming started.
That same month, Fitzgerald opened up about when she first learned about her costars’ relationship.
“We were out together and I noticed the way he was looking at her was different, so when she went to the bathroom I confronted him,” Fitzgerald told Cosmopolitan UK in November 2021. “When she came back Jason said, ‘Sorry Chrishell, Mary knows.'”
During an exclusive interview with Us, Jason opened up about how the couple went from friends and colleagues to more.
“There was definitely a transition. We had been so open about what we were looking for with each other because we had become close friends,” he shared with Us. “She knew my dating life, and we would almost joke about each other’s dating lives and what we were looking for and things like that.”
He also shared that Chrishell wanted to keep the relationship private for as long as possible. “I think that we were both more comfortable with that approach, and I liked that. I followed her lead on things, and I respected her decision-making on that,” he explained. “I think that that’s the right approach for anyone.”
The cast of Selling Sunset has been completely supportive of the couple. Maya Vander admitted that “it doesn’t hurt to [date the boss],” but reiterated that the actress wasn’t getting special treatment. “At the end of the day, she does have good clients now that she built on her own. So whatever Jason decides to help here and then it’s his call, it’s his brokerage,” she told Us.
Mary Fitzgerald later told Us at the People’s Choice Awrads: “I was surprised but they started off as friends and they’re very good for each other. I’m waiting to see what happens but they are two of my very, very best friends and I want nothing more than for both of them to be happy and right now, they make each other happy.”
It’s over. A source confirmed to Us Weekly that Jason and Stause broke up before Christmas.
Less than two months after their split, Jason supported Chrishell at a signing for her book, Under Construction: Because Living My Best Life Took a Little Work. He posed for pictures with his ex-girlfriend alongside Brett and Emma Hernan at the Barnes and Noble in Westwood, California.
Jason helped Hernan throw Stause a surprise birthday bash in Los Angeles days before she turned 41. “I have the BEST friends,” the birthday girl wrote via Instagram on July 17. “So my actual bday is Thursday July 21st, & thought I was just going to dinner with @emmahernan. Bday elves Emma & @jasonoppenheim coordinated the absolute BEST early bday surprise!”
Jason, for his part, gushed over his dynamic with Stause after calling it quits on their romance months prior. “Chrishell and I started off close friends before we were together, and we’re back, we’re in a great place,” he told E! News. “I think we’re both really happy right now, and we get along really well. … I was honored to be able to be with her on her birthday and it was a really, really good night.”
One year after they called it quits, the exes went on a double date in Australia with their respective partners, G Flip and Marie-Lou Nurk. Chrishell documented the outing via her Instagram Story, which included lunch and dancing with Jason.
